Since its inception in 2002 the GAMAA Leadership Workshop Programme has developed into a unique and highly regarded educational opportunity in the industry. Forming the heart of the GAMAA
Leadership Scholarship Programme, the workshops are held twice yearly as threeday residential modules that are compulsory for GAMAAscholarship recipients, and also open to professionals working in printing, graphics and related disciplines.
The workshops bring together a unique blend of academia, industry professionals and theatricality, providing a rare and valuable learning environment as participants Graham Trickey, of Hannanprint NSW;and Gus Balbontin, of Lonely Planet, discovered. Graham Trickey commented, "For me, one of the most important aspects of the workshops is that everyone is on equal footing regardless of their position at work.
In an environment where everyone is on the same level you feel more comfortable and are more likely to speak your mind, to be the person you really are.
"The more I participate in these workshops, the more I understand that to succeed as a leader you need to use emotional intelligence to connect with people. The workshop environment helps you to
work your way through your emotions and to understand their impact on you and the
people you interact with:' Often, what you learn in a workshop is difficult to translate when you are
back at work; however, Graham said this hasn't been his experience.
"On my first day back in the office after one of the earlier workshops I attended I was able to use some of the coaching techniques we'd le.arned to help me with a colleague .whoiwas having a few problems.
That sort of uptake is really valuable.
The GAMAA Leadership Workshop Programme offers a unique and much needed, learning experience to the graphic arts industry.
Initially developed with the Melbourne Business School, the workshops today fall under the GAMAAEducation auspice and are co-ordinated by GAMAA's education manager, Samantha Crock. The workshops feature presenters from both academia and the industry, providing participants with the opportunity to tap into some of the brightest minds in the business.
The 2006 programme will feature two workshops:
Melbourne - Pursuing Business Excellence
May 4 - 6;
Sydney - Integrating Innovation and Leadership
August 31 -September 2.
